Locals should get used to seeing a different type of Rainn on the streets of Vancouver.

Rainn Wilson, best known for his time on NBC sitcom The Office, is working around the Lower Mainland filming his new TV series, Backstrom.

The Fox network crime drama is based on a string of Swedish novels about a group of unconventional criminologists. Wilson fills the role of Det. Everett Backstrom, a dark departure from his days of playing the iconic character of paper salesman/beet farmer Dwight Schrute.

Wilson was spotted Saturday outside the Neutral Milk Hotel concert on Granville Street with Vancouver-based musician Dan Mangan.

The actor has been posting regularly to his Twitter feed about his time in the city, including a run-in with teen model United Nations delegates and a sign backstage at a strip club that asks chewing gum be disposed of in waste bins, not between couch cushions.

Thirteen episodes of the Portland-set series began filming at the end of March. The pilot for the series was shot in Vancouver a year ago.
